In his keynote lecture prof. Antonio Negri will discuss the common in relations to post-Habermasian theories of the public sphere. Contextualizing the main problems analyzed in the Empire trilogy written with Michael Hardt, Negri will demonstrate a political project of the common, alternative to the one offered in the liberal political philosophy and practice. The main differences between his project involving the “multitude” and the liberal one consist on crossing the private/public divide, renegotiation of the private property and political analytics of labor, in which it is the biopolitical labor, and not some politics merely abstracted from it, constitutes the social. In relation to the social, ecological and cultural commons, which are merely treated as “assets” in the classical political theories, Negri has built a political theory of governance by the multitude, and not above it, by means of institutions managed by capital. Accentuating the powers of the excluded and poor, and their political agency, Negri – in collaboration with Michael Hardt, Judith Revel and other authors, created perhaps the most inspiring alternative to the neoliberal political theory, one, that challenges not just its symptoms, but also its premises. His theory has been the main inspiration of artistic practices, therefore it is very clear, why he was invited to give a keynote lecture in the “Public sphere and art” seminar. The contemporary artistic strategies of production and resistance do not simply allow understanding the biopolitical governmentality, but also strenghten these strategic resistances in the production, which directly translate into the main political mobilizations of contemporary societies.

Ways of engaging in the bourgeois public sphere and proletarian, feminist and queer counterpublics in Poland 1968-2014. (Patterns Lectures Series): This is a second semester of the seminar held in fall 2014. The aim of this course is to engage with theories of the public sphere created within 20th century political philosophy (Habermas, Kluge, Fraser, Berlant, Warner, Rosler and others) and to discuss them in the context of the emerging analysis of the philosophy of the common (Negri, Revel, Virno, Butler) in order to prepare for the discussion about the contemporary public art and its political dimensions. The concept of public sphere has been quite extensively used in Poland and internationally in debates over public art in particular, and this seminar is aimed at allowing these debates to use more specific and contextualized theoretical tools and also to make them grasp the often unexpected repercussions of artistic interventions. In cognitive capitalism neoliberal preoccupation on immediate profit managed to overcome the critical and emancipatory art forms, we will therefore turn to the political theories, both: classical and those currently shaped, also with participation of artists and curators, in order to participate with the discussion concerning the artistic, social and political contexts of the public and how it becomes the common. A large part of the seminar will consist on academic study, however we will also visit two main Warsaw institutions providing space for public art – the CCA Ujazdowski Castle and the MOMA Warsaw to discuss actual exhibitions and projects, to meet curators and artists and to engage in the debate with cultural producers. Antonio Negri zajmie się zagadnieniem tego, co wspólne, w odniesieniu do po-habermasowskich teorii sfery publicznej. Kontekstualizując w ten sposób kluczowe wątki z trzeciej części napisanej z Michaelem Hardtem trylogii Imperium, Negri przedstawi alternatywny do liberalnej filozofii politycznej projekt demokratycznej polityki, tego, co wspólne. Kluczowe kwestie różniące projekt liberalny i projekt wspólnoty wielości (multitude), to przede wszystkim przekraczanie podziału na sferę publiczną i prywatną, renegocjacja własności prywatnej i tego, co wspólne oraz polityczna analityka pracy, w której to ona właśnie, a nie wyabstrahowana z niej polityczność, stanowi trzon tego, co społeczne. Odnosząc się między innymi do problemu społecznych, ekologicznych i kulturowych dóbr wspólnych, w klasycznych teoriach politycznych traktowanych w zasadzie wyłącznie ilościowo jako "zasoby", Negri od wielu lat buduje teorię polityki i tego, co wspólne, zarządzanych przez wielościową wspólnotę, a nie oparte na władzy kapitału instytucje. Akcentując siłę wykluczonych i biednych oraz ich polityczną sprawczość wypracowywaną w rozmaitych formach oporu, Negri stworzył być może najbardziej inspirującą demokratyczną teorię władzy omijającą pułapki współczesnych demokracji, które fetyszyzując instytucjonalne aspekty rządzenia ignorują polityczny wymiar wielości - oddolne mobilizacje zbudowane na oporze wobec bezwzględnych sił kapitału. Jego teoria tego, co wspólne, ma od wielu lat fundamentalne znaczenie w inspirowaniu i kształtowaniu praktyk i postaw artystycznych, stąd propozycja, by swoją koncepcję omawiał w ramach seminarium "Sfera publiczna i sztuka". W szczególności współczesne artystyczne strategie produkcji i oporu, jako skupione na pracy niematerialnej, pozwalają nie tylko lepiej zrozumieć znaczenie biopolitycznej rządomyślności, ale umożliwiają też wzmocnienie tych strategicznie ważnych wątków oporu w produkcji, które bezpośrednio przekładają się na polityczne mobilizacje współczesnych społeczeństw.
